Mustang Sally-Manchester, Vermont
August 25th, 2008 Posted in UncategorizedHi Everyone!
I know everyone is asking When is she going to get out of Vermont? Currently I’m in Manchester. Got in early yesterday, around 10 a.m. That gave me time to do some chores and then eat a restaurant meal, look at all the stores, and get a hot fudge sundae. It was all GOOD!!! Manchester has a really fantastic bookstore. They have authors coming in all the time discussing their books. When I was there, the line for checkout was 10 deep, and this was in the middle of the week. Otherwise,I’m not in love with this town. It’s a big discount center with all the big names and stores here for the tourists. They all look the same. Manchester is more spread out than Rutland, so it’s not walker friendly.
Getting back on the trail tomorrow a.m. Should be out of Vermont by the end of the fifth day, next Tuesday. My next three states should go fairly fast as Mass. is 90 miles, Conn. is 52 miles and NY is 88 miles. I hope that if I cut down on my zero days that I can finish NJ too, as it’s only 72 miles. Then I would only have PA and Maryland left on the southern end and north, I would have to complete the rest of Maine, all of NH and part of Vermont. So, I will be a AT section hiker, not a thru hiker.
Got some new clothes in Rutland. My weight is now 112 lbs., down from 133 pounds, I figured this way, I would have some clothes to wear when I get home.
Weather is going to be good for next week and I have my food packed in the backpack. So, I will be off and walking tomorrow am.
Staying in another hostel. This whole house is devoted to us, the AT hikers. The gentleman who owns it has another house, which he and his wife lives in not too far from here. The man is the one interested in hiking and is doing the AT in sections. He charges nothing for staying here and has a 2 day limit. Course you can make a donation. He has regular twin beds with nice mattresses and linen to go with the beds. So that you can wash all your clothes, he has boxer shorts and shirt that you can use after taking a shower while your clothes are being washed and dried. You make your own meals and put the dishes in the dishwasher. Hiking boots are placed in a big bin upon coming in the front door. Poles are left by the front pouch outside to keep the dirt down. We have a nice size flat screen TV and all the furniture that goes with a house. There’s three bedrooms upstairs, and in the living room two more twin beds.
Coming off the trail, the gentleman will come and pick you up and then upon departure drops you back off.
It’s a beautiful day here and as I’m writing this I’m looking out the window at the flowers, the mountains, and the totally blue sky, that doesn’t have a cloud. A clock is ticking in the background and all is peaceful here. I’m the only person in the house, as all the hikers departed but me. It’s sort of nice to have the place to yourself.
Guess that’s about all for now. I will go back to relaxing and of course reading my book. I just finished a top seller called The Race, by Richard North Patterson. He was a lawyer with the Securities and Exchange Commission. We would go out and interview people who were having problems with their stocks or the broker. Anyway, it’s a good read with the subject being the presidential race, all with fictitious characters.
Take care and will e-mail again in a week or so.
